FAQs

What is medical micro-needling?

Micro-needling, or Collagen Induction Therapy, is a non-medical skin treatment procedure. Using an electric skin-needling device, it breaks down old scar tissue to encourage skin cell regeneration. This cell production leads to the creation of new layers of elastin and collagen fibre, resulting in improved skin appearance.

How does medical micro-needling work?

The micro-needling device glides along the skin and penetrates the upper layers to a depth of up to 2mm. The process creates tiny needle wounds in the skin. This signals the body to respond by producing collagen and elastin fibres. As a result, the skin becomes fuller, thus reducing the appearance of imperfections.

What conditions can be treated or improved with medical micro-needling?

Medical micro-needling is known to improve several skin conditions, including fine lines and wrinkles, mild to moderate acne, scarring, stretch marks, sagging skin and, overall, it can improve skin texture.

What will I look like after the treatment?

Treatment will likely result in redness to the area of skin, with mild swelling occurring for 12-48 hours. Your skin will be noticeably smoother and more radiant within a week or two. The full potential will develop over a couple of months alongside continued treatment sessions.

When will I see the results and how many times will I need treatment?

With micro-needling, there will be an immediate plumping effect around the treated area. However, the natural healing process can take up to six weeks with results improving over time. It is recommended that you undergo 3-6 treatment sessions, but this may differ depending on your needs.

What does the procedure of medical micro-needling involve?

Micro-needling begins with cleaning and numbing the area of skin. I then administer a hydrogel.

I use an electronic pen device with microscopic needles which glide across the area of skin to create tiny wounds. The speed and adjustability of the needles allow for more effective piercing and better absorption of skincare products.

Selective active ingredients which include Vitamin C serum or hyaluronic acids are used after the procedure to hydrate, heal and protect the skin.

How long does the treatment take?

Micro-needling treatment will take approximately 30 minutes depending on the size of the area of skin, although the appointment will be 60 minutes to allow for the numbing cream to take effect.

What is the downtime after medical micro-needling treatment?

Downtime will be minimal. Clients will likely notice a mild sunburn sensation resulting in slightly pink skin for 12-48 hours. Mild swelling will also occur, but any inflammation will greatly reduce in the first few hours.

The use of hyaluronic acid after the treatment will help to protect and hydrate the area of skin and the use of repair cream helps to repair and rejuvenate the skin after treatment to protect the skin. I recommend avoiding any physical activities for the first three days as this could cause irritation. I would recommend using mineral-based makeup products for a few days after.

What are the benefits of medical micro-needling?

There are several known benefits to medical micro-needling. These include improving the effectiveness and penetration of topical creams, as well as stimulating blood circulation and collagen production. It is a cost-effective practice, and the needles are non-allergenic. Furthermore, micro-needling works on all skin types and can treat the face, scalp and body, including skin around the eyes, neck and mouth.

Is medical micro-needling painful?

Whilst there is a slight tingling sensation felt across the skin during the procedure, any pain will be reduced thanks to the application of the numbing cream.

Is there a risk of infection?

The risk of an infection occurring after micro-needling treatment is extremely minimal due to the controlled procedure the treatment is performed. The skin has a natural ability to heal quickly, further decreasing the risk of infection.

How many times will I need treatment and how often can medical micro-needling be repeated?

Micro-needling can be safely repeated every 4-6 weeks. For the best results, collagen induction requires at least 3-6 treatments, while scar reduction may take 4-6 sessions. The number of treatments you need will depend on your personal requirements. This is something that will be planned at the beginning during your free, confidential consultation. It is recommended 1-2 treatments each year to sustain the benefits of the treatment.

What are the side effects of medical micro-needling?

The simple answer is none. In more than 150,000 successful worldwide procedures, no negative side effects have been reported.

Can micro-needling be performed on any skin colour?

Yes. Medical micro-needling is safe to use on all skin types and colours without risk of post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

When isn’t micro-needling an appropriate procedure?

Micro-needling is not suitable for people who have used strong medication primarily used to treat severe acne within the last three months. You will not receive treatment if you have cuts or abrasions, open wounds, have had radiation skin treatment within the last year, are suffering from any skin infection, condition, or herpes simplex in the area of concern. It is not a suitable procedure if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, have any history of keloid or hypertrophic scars or poor wound healing.

How much does medical micro-needling cost?

Immerse will arrange a free, fully confidential consultation to discuss treatment frequency and cost based on your individual needs. A treatment plan will be created to suit you, and each session will take place in your own home.
